What Is Required For An American To Go To College/university In Canada ?

I'm 17 1/2 and a Junior in high school and I know this is the time to start thinking about what college I'm interested in and I've been wanting to go to Canada for a while and I was wondering how I would get to going there like do I need a student visa ??

Best Answer

YES you need a visa . That is the easy part for an American student. You get it AFTER you are admitted to University.

Just like to go to a US University you select your school of choice and apply for admission. As a student from out of province you get to try for one of a small number of seats set aside for this. You are competing with other students from around the world. You should be in at least the top 5-10% of your high school class. Just having the minimum marks required does not mean you get an invitation to come to a University. More than just marks are considered.

Funding? There are some US student aid things that will assist with this in Canada. There are few scholarships from Canada for US Citizens. Many Canadian schools have scholarship programs for international students but these are mainly at the graduate level.

Some US/Canada Universities have exchange programs where you take some classes in the other country and can get credit at your home school.

The cost for you is similar to the cost of US University $15-30,000 per year or more. Depends on the courses you take and length of program for total cost.

This is a list of the major University/Colleges in Canada. Do not get fooled by things like the College of Hair Dressing for example not quite what you are looking for.

Each of the schools has a web site all on this list are of good quality. All schools DO NOT teach in all fields. Just going to school in Canada does not mean you get to stay and work in Canada.
You will also need to investigate your Canadian school's degree for what it can do for you in your home area.

There are also schools for trades each state/province has rules for the trades but they all do give some credit for out of state training.. Will usually need to write an in state test for final certification just like every in state student does.

Good Luck lots to read about each school. Need to first decide what you want to study. That will cut down the where locations.

It can be done it is not easy not every Canadian student qualifies for University. The higher your marks the better your chances.Work on that for your final year for ANY University US or Canada.

The word College is used differently in Canada in the school system.NON Universities have many different names.
